2011 Napa Valley Rutherford Appellation Winter Passport

Twice a year, in Spring and Winter, the Rutherford Appellation Wineries host an incredible weekend. Last Winter, visitors to the Winter Passport enjoyed wines from the Rutherford Appellation paired with creative, warming, delicious cuisine such as Chanterelle Hazelnut Soup, Brunswick Stew, and Wild Boar Chili. This year’s Winter Passport, on December 3rd & 4th, invites returning and new visitors to choose from 18 wineries and wine producers.

This event allows guests to taste wines from a variety of wineries located in the Rutherford Appellation. The list of wineries includes those that are historic, family-owned, well-known, off the beaten path, and open by appointment only. Some of these wineries use Green farming practices. Others do not have a tasting room.

Sawyer Cellars, open only by appointment, will open its doors to all Winter Passport ticket holders. Sawyer Cellars will be sharing their 2007 Estate Merlot, 2007 Estate Bradford Meritage, 2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and from the barrel – 2010 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2007 Sawyer Cellars Estate Cabernet Sauvignon received 92 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. A Lentil and Pancetta Soup will be served with these estate wines.

Franciscan Estates is open daily to the public. As a special treat for those attending Winter Passport, one of the wines Franciscan will be pouring is Clos Reserve 2007, a small case production wine available exclusively at the winery. Franciscan will also be pouring the highly acclaimed, award-winning 2007 Magnificat, Napa Valley. A Cabernet Cassoulet will accompany these very special wines.

Make sure to purchase your tickets to enjoy a weekend of conversations with winemakers, tastings of special release wines, and discovering or reigniting an appreciation for wines from Napa Valley’s Rutherford Appellation. A family group usually consists of parents and children – and some of those children might be under the age of 21. Visitors to Alpha Omega Winery can taste wines in the tasting room or out on the patio decorated with lush, comfortable, outdoor furniture. The patio deck stretches along the side of the building. While relaxing in the warmth of the sun, guests enjoy a view of vineyards as the backdrop to a large pool of water that features a unique fountain spraying water out of several jets. The picnic area is large and shaded. If you’re planning on bringing snacks to enjoy a picnic lunch, make sure to call ahead to see if the picnic area has been reserved for any special events.

Children under 5 are not allowed on the tours; however, there is a discounted rate for tours for minors between 5 and 20 years old. The tours vary in length and can include visits to different parts of this expansive castle. Parents with children of any age can also enjoy their visit without a tour. Admission into the castle covers tasting fees and additionally grants access to the two main levels of the castle. During the busiest time of year, a private tasting area is set up just for parents with children. While parents enjoy tasting Castello di Amorosa wines, their children enjoy coloring and sipping grape juice.

Napa Valley Rutherford Appellation Wineries Passport Weekend

As a Northern California Wine Country resident, I’ve spent more than one afternoon exploring the wineries in Napa Valley. With 15 subappellations and approximately 400 wineries, Napa Valley proprietors and winemakers have earned a global reputation for world-class wines.

One of the easiest, most enjoyable ways to sample Napa Valley wines from wineries in a single appellation is to make sure you don’t miss this year’s Rutherford Appellation Wineries Passport Weekend. On Saturday, December 4th and Sunday, December 5th, Passport ticket holders will be able to meet winemakers, experience barrel and tank tastings, food and wine pairings, entertainment, special discounts, and more.

Although the Rutherford appellation is most well-known for Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel; visitors will find more delicious varietals to taste. Proceeds from Passport Weekend will benefit a Napa Valley charity.

Alpha Omega will also be offering a southern style Brunswick stew paired with Alpha Omega Chardonnay Unoaked 2009.

Passport ticket holders interested in tasting both a white and red varietal created by Hall Winery are invited to Rutherford Grange for a tasting of Hall Winery 2009 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and Hall Winery 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet. The outstanding Napa Valley Cabernet received 94 points from Wine Spectator. Hall Winery will be serving Cannellini bean soup with a tasty twist – pumpernickel croutons and sun chokes.

Mumm Napa Valley will also be offering Passport guests a specially made soup to pair with their award-winning sparkling wines. The chanterelle, hazelnut soup is certain to be perfect with Mumm Napa Valley 2001 DVX. Guests will also taste Mumm Reserve Brut. Both sparkling wines will be available for purchase at a discounted rate available to Passport Guests.
